What a CGI Team Needs From You Before the First Render
The first question about a render is usually how long it takes. The honest answer is that most of it is settled before anyone opens Cinema 4D, by what arrives in the folder at the start. A photoreal frame is a claim about a real object, and the claim can only be as accurate as the description it was built from.
So here is what actually decides whether a scene lands in one round.
Geometry: the manufacturing file, or the physical unit
CAD beats photographs every time. A STEP or IGES export from whoever engineered the product gives exact surfaces, exact fillets, exact thread pitch. Failing that, hand over a physical unit that can be measured or scanned.
Photographs as the only reference means modelling by inference. The silhouette will be close and something small will be wrong, usually a radius — because a radius is the thing an eye memorises without ever being told to. People who handle the product daily cannot describe what is off, but they know the render is not it.
Materials are not colours
A material is a description of what a surface does to light, which is why a colour swatch is not enough. Anodised aluminium and painted aluminium are different objects under the same lamp. A matte lacquer and a soft-touch coating scatter differently. Glass needs thickness and tint, not just transparency. Foil has to be identified as cold foil or hot stamp, because they behave differently inside a highlight.
Send the physical sample if one exists. If not, send the spec: finish name, gloss level, substrate, and anything applied on top of it.
Artwork at production quality, and one authoritative colour
Labels and packaging should arrive as vector or print-ready PDF with the dieline, at the size they are actually produced at. A logo pulled off a website renders exactly like a logo pulled off a website.
Then settle which colour is authoritative, because there are usually three candidates and they disagree with each other: the value written in the brand guideline, the printed carton on someone's desk, and the product photography already live in retail. Nominate one before the grade — otherwise the notes that come back are not really about the render, they are an unresolved argument about which reference was right.
The handover list
- CAD, or a unit that can be scanned or measured.
- Material specs, plus physical samples of any finish that carries the frame.
- Label and packaging artwork as vector, with dielines, at production size.
- One nominated authoritative colour reference.
- The full ratio and deliverable list, including anything heading for print or large format.
- Any existing photography or lighting reference the new work has to sit beside.
Good inputs pay twice
A scene built from real data is an asset rather than a one-off. Modelled at real-world scale, with named shaders and clean UVs, it becomes the thing next season's variant is built from: swap the shader, change the label, relight, re-render. A scene reverse-engineered from photographs cannot be extended safely, because nobody can say which parts were measured and which were guessed — so the next campaign pays for the modelling a second time.
That is the difference between commissioning a picture and commissioning a system, and it is decided entirely by the inputs.
What happens once the folder arrives
The build is the part that looks like the work: layout and modelling in Cinema 4D, lighting and shading, rendering through Octane or Redshift depending on what the scene demands, Houdini where cloth, liquid or particles are involved, compositing in Nuke, review in Frame.io so a note lands on a frame instead of in a thread.
None of it corrects a wrong radius. Send the file, the sample and the spec, and the render looks like the product for the simple reason that it was built from the product.
